Disgorge: Consume the forsaken
11/10/07 || The Duff
What the fuck…? What the…? What’s happened to my face? I… can’t feel my ears. Oh fuck, where the fuck are my ears? More importantly, who the fuck are Disgorge (America, folks, not Mexico)? A tech death band that is about as uncompromising as it is difficult.
Influences? Suffocation and Deeds of Flesh. Every death metal band and its testicles take some schooling from Morbid Angel, at least that’s what I’ve learned from experience, but Disgorge don’t make this all too obvious on “Consume the Forsaken” – you take the brutality of Deeds of Flesh, the brutality of Suffocation, , mix them up and gang rape them, et voila.
The production on this beast is unfriendly, and well, some of the riffs consequently aren’t too easy to make out. The breakdowns can sound like chug-chug-chugging powerchords about the first three frets, every single one of them, yet I’m sure that this is due to Disgorge wanting to make “Consume the Forsaken” very “underground” – everything else is complex, well written and… that’s it. No groove, and sure as fuck no catchiness.
That about sums it up. A straight for the pleasure-marbles death assault that comes in swift and leaves you thinking “Fuck, that was good, but I still just wasted twenty minutes of my life; my life expectancy probably has just been shortened by three years, too”. You could invest time in this, but then I’m guessing that if you’d actually want to, sunshine is your mortal foe and the smile on a child’s face makes you cough up blood.
I’ve only listened to this once; it’s a good album, no doubt, very well executed, but what the fuck? I shan’t listen to it again, and the Disgorge name from now on only be associated with “Oh yeah, those talented guys who play with no heart. I remember them.”
This is a novelty band – the one band that kinda breaks away from what you would usually label tasteful music and therefore something you listen to solely because you want to pound your own scrotum into the dirt, but the musicianship is super-tight, so plus one gives:
6 kinda neat things out of 10.
